The Soviet Union, now known as Russia, had control of Alaska during the 1800's and sold it to USA in 1867. But who are the Soviet Union?
The Soviet Union was a Communist State which almost became one of the most powerful nations in the world before its dissolution in 1991. It had control of most of Northern Eurasia.
Why did the USA buy Alaska?
There are a few reasons why the USA bought Alaska are; to limit the chance of colonisation from any European Country, more so Britain. But also as the USA was building its trade links and Alaska was in the perfect place for a refuel point as it had near 360' of water available.
