Interesting Facts:
-When it was in use around 30 toilets released the excrement into the moat surrounding the castle
-It has starred in multiple different tv shows including Dr Who, Camelot and also most known, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Why was it built?
The real reason as to why the castle was built is unknown however there are three main reasons which are thought to be the most relevant, Status and Wealth, Defense against the potential French Invasion, but what is seen as the most relevant was for his family. But it would make sense for all three of these reasons to all contribute to the reason for the castle to be built.
What actually happened to it?
Sir Edward Dalyngrigge sold most of the estate to John Tufton it was passed down to his Son, however during the Civil War it ended up being sold again to pay the fine that John Tufton received for supporting the Royalist, it was then removed of all defenses and the inside was built in to make it unusable. Many people took it on over its time however most notably Sir Thomas Webster who repaired one of the towers and removed a cottage from inside the castle. In 1925 it was then handed over to the National Trust who have kept it ever since.
